Your Youth Committee 2000 has some great ideas for contests that you will be able to participate in even if you do not show horses at the present time.
The new Millennium fast approaches and they are committed to do everything in
their power to see that every Youth Member of this organization feels the
impact of it and their dedication!!!!!

!!Best wishes for the Holidays!!

** YOUTH POWER **

EDITORIAL
The 1999 AMHA National Show proved to be a great success on behalf of the
Youth.

The Youth Judging Contest proved to be a big hit, drawing around 75 youth from all over the country to judge the horses.

As for the silent auctions, they earned a total of $6,600 for the youth, with $2,400 of that amount going to the Youth Scholarship Fund and $3,200 going to the general Youth Fund.

On another note, I would personally like to congratulate all of you who competed in the various classes at the National Show. I got to meet a few of you and will eventually meet the rest, hopefully.

There was a lot of talent in the show ring and you all deserve to be
congratulated. Itís not easy. Hopefully you'll be back in the ring at the 2000 National Show.

Youth Team Tournament

As some of you may know the Team Tournament is a contest where all the Youth
entered in the National Show are placed on a Team. The Teams are grouped
using the number of classes each Youth is entered in and the age group they
are in, so that ages and classes equitably proportion the Teams. This way
each Team has an equal chance of winning if their placements afford such.

Now then, it was discovered a few years ago that the Youth Costume Class
sometimes had multiple youth per entry and some of the group would be from
different Teams. It was the decision of the Youth Committee at the time,
that instead of trying to figure out who all should get points, to disregard
the Costume Class entirely from the Team point totals.

This issue is now being brought to you, AMHA Youth members for a resolution.
Your Youth Committee is of a ìsplit decisionî, and we thought we would leave
it to you. Please see the voting from below or in the newsletter your received in the mail in order to cast your vote "For" or"Against" thisProposition.
Costume Class points toward Team Tournament Point Totals. Voting "For"means
you want the points to count. Voting "Against"means you do not want the
points to count.

Something that may help you decide is that the Committee did determine that
the only way to count the points would be to give them to the person who
"enters the class" and not everyone included in the entry.

First AMHA Youth Art Contest
~~~Huge Success~~~
Thanks to the efforts of Youth Committee member, Allison Rosauer, we had on
display at the National Show an exquisite array of art designed by your
fellow AMHA Youth Members! A Note from Allison below:
"First of all we want to thank everyone who entered. There was a tremendous
response this first year, and all are to be congratulated! What a great
display of talent. The variety of art depicted anything from cartoons to
stained glass, and even the judges were impressed. I had several spectators
inquire if the art was for sale.
There will be a few rule changes for the 2000 contest. Watch your
Newsletter for details on it and information on other contests. Go AMHA
Youth!! We are very proud of you all! Lets keep it up for next year."
Please Note:
Something to note is to check your deadlines when you get the information for
the 2000 contests (yes that is plural!) your Millennium Youth Committee has
more things in mind for you to work on this next year. However DEADLINES are
very important! We did have some art projects that appeared after the
judging was completed, and were not included. Although we felt bad about
this there was nothing to do but send them back. You will have plenty of
time if you read your Newsletter when you get it and set enough time aside to
meet the deadline.
Some of the new contest ideas are: Art Contest continued, an Essay Contest,
an Award of Excellence Program, and a ??? Program whereby you will be awarded
prizes for the number of hours spent caring for your horse. This one is
ìunnamedî at present. See Proposition 3 for naming it. Details for these
contests will appear in future Newsletters.
AMHA Scholarship Winners
The winners of the AMHA Youth Scholarships were announced at the National
Show this year. Those winning scholarships for $1,500.00 were Summer Sayles,
Ginger Case, and KC Shedden.
We also awarded 2 - $500.00 Scholarships and
they went to Meghan Cavanaugh, and Shannon Reuss. We congratulate these
achievers and wish them success as they pursue their education.
A little about our winners:
Summer Sayles lives in Estacada, OR and her area of study is Education as she
would like to become a teacher in order to have the summers free for horse
showing.
Ginger Case lives in College Station, TX and will be pursuing Computer
Sciences with a future for Veterinary Medicine.
KC Shedden lives in Aloha, OR and will be majoring in Biology, minoring in
Environmental Sciences with his goal toward Veterinary Medicine.
Shannon Reuss lives in Graytown, OH and will be majoring in Animal Science
and Beef Genetics.
Meghan Cavanaugh lives in Mason, MI and is pursuing a career as an
Obstetrician.
We have asked them to stay in touch to let us know how they are doing. We
will report as they do!
Youth Judging Contest
Although this was a first time event, many of our Youth participated.
Through a couple very special people it went off without a hitch. Jon Wolf
and his wife Jane took over and managed the event for us. They did a
wonderful job. Below is their address, if any of you that participated would
like to send them a personal thank you.
Mr. & Mrs. Jon Wolf
28178 Saxon Rd
Galva, IL 61434
We want to thank the "official judges", John Belcher, William Fairchild, Mike
McCabe, and also Sid Hutchcraft who coordinated their official cards.
There were 73 participants for this first Judging Contest. The contestants
had to only give their scores for each class. Next year we will have more
time to give to this event, and you will be required to give reasons as to
why you placed the horses the way you did.
Now the question of you: Would you like to operate the Judging Contest as we
did this year, each individual person on his/her own, or as Teams via the
arrangement of Youth for the Team Tournament? See Proposition 2 for voting.
Voting ìIndividualî would mean keeping it, as it was this year. Voting
"Team" would mean you want to participate as a Team.
Proposition 4
There was some talk at the Annual Meeting about increasing fees. It seems
that the Fee structure for the AMHA has not had an increase in a number of
years. During the Youth Committee Report it was offered to increase the
Youth Membership Fee to $10.00 instead of the current $5.00 which has been
that way since the 1980ís. It is perfectly understandable to not wish to
increase a fee for kids when there is not much that you do for them.
However, this past year the AMHA has proven that they care about the young
people in their Association. So weíll leave it to you Youth Members. Do you
think for the programs that you are being exposed to and those that will be
accomplished in the future that it would be unreasonable to increase the
Youth Membership fee by $5.00. On the Voting Ballot cast your vote for $5.00
or $10.00. Since it was voted down at the Annual Meeting, if you vote to
increase it would not go into effect until 2001.
You will need to use the Ballot you got in the mail for Voting
E-mail and fax copies will not be accepted!
Thank You
For your Help
What Can't You Do With A Miniature Horse?"
It seems as though the frequent questioning about our Miniature Horses'
usefulness never ends. Usually, knowledgeable Miniature enthusiasts reply
proudly to these questions with the simple facts -- Miniatures make
wonderful, loving companions, pleasure, show, and business investments (plus
much more) -- but this year's Halloween night produced another question, when
a friend and I went a step further with our own Miniatures. The questions
then turned to a more intrigued, "What can't you do with a Miniature Horse?"
I truly believe the sky really is the limit.
Though left unspoken, the question seemed to linger silently about
whenever anyone saw us -- two teenage girls and our weanling Miniature colts
-- Trick or Treating. With my "Orion" wearing "Butterfly wings," and my
friend, Gina's "KC" wearing "Ladybug wings" -- both costumes originally meant
to be worn by small children, added ribbons adorning their manes and tails --
we paraded about from one house to the next, leaving huge smiles in our wake.
Our boys were an instant success, and we had a great time promoting the
breed, them, and their breeders -- Bill and Jean Harless at their Lady J's
Ranch. This was our first debut under the central Arizona stars, and our
little ones were dressed for success -- petite wings flapping noiselessly
about as though in flight. We plan to do repeat performances in the future,
bringing 'Miniature literature' to pass out to interested parties. Hopefully,
others will follow our lead across the nation, leading 'across the sky,' and
continue showing the general public just what our darling Minis can do, not
to mention how high a little bit of imagination and love can carry you ...
stay tuned to next Newsletter for photos.
