This is a letter from Cheryl Belcher, Chairman of the Youth Committee. StarMaker8@aol.com (Cheryl)
(Please send your donations to the AMHA Office, though. Thank you!)Hello friends!
The Youth Team Tournament at the AMHA National Show is held during the opening weekend of the show with youth competition and the parade of teams. All of you that helped us last year are to be commended for your dedication to our AMHA Youth!
All the kids enjoyed the things they received, and I personally want to thank everyone that helped in any way. You were wonderful, and the kids were very appreciative! To let our youth exhibitors know again how important they are to our industry, I am asking, on behalf of the AMHA Youth Committee, and the Tournament's Team Leaders, that anyone and everyone consider donating items that we can present to the teams. Any donated item (which can be as small as a hoof pick or as large as you care) must be donated in blocks of 12 since each team will have12 members.
For those of you who are not familiar with the Tournament, here's a brief description of it: Every youth exhibitor at the National Show is placed on one of six teams. The youth are divided up so that each team us basically equal in terms of age, ability and number of classes entered.
The youth members compete as individuals in their classes, yet a team score is tabulated.
On the last afternoon of their classes, the teams parade in their colors into the arena (with proper Pomp!) and learn how well each team faired.
All team members will be presented with a participation medal and a "goodie bag" filled with the donated items. The winning team and the team that places second are awarded satin jackets to commemorate their victory. What's truly great about the Tournament is the way the youth exhibitors make friends with other youth that they otherwise may never have met. It forms friendships that carryover year-to-year and it gets the youth rooting for one another (instead of just competing against eachother!).
Many times we've seen the youth REALLY get into the team aspect of the Tournament, making lists oftheir teammates' classes, watching and cheering!! It creates good sportsmanship (a novel concept, huh?).
It also enables each youth exhibitor to go home with a prize, regardless of how well he/she did in the show. They can proudly display that medal and enjoy the donated items. So how about it, folks?
Care to let our youth exhibitors know we're proud of them by donating 12 of some great item?
Please be as generous as you can!We can also suggest ideas if you're at a loss for what to donate!
(It is difficult to know "what the kids like", except to ask kids, but what one kid might like, another wouldn't, so all I can tell you is that they "seemed" to enjoy anything that has been given in the past, which was anything from hoof picks, buckets, lead ropes, horse shampoos, brushes, etc for horses, to bouncing balls, note pads, hats, t-shirts, pens, toys-- for "kids."
We'll accept anything.....use your imagination!
The more stuff we can get the better. Everything is divided among the number of kids involved in the Team Tournament, so that each kid recieves a "bag of goodies." (the number12 is because there are usually 12 members to a team)
Please send them to:

Please be sure to include your name and farm name in your donation packet!
Since we're starting a little earlier than last year :) we ought to be able to have lots and lots of "stuff" for 2000...............Thank you in advance for your generosity!
Sincerely,
Cheryl Belcher
